Trailways Rolls into Destin for 78th Annual Conference

Fairfax, Virginia – February 7, 2014 –  Luxury motorcoaches will be rolling into the Destin area of Florida for the national gathering of Trailways bus company owners, March 9-11 at the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort. It is the company’s 78th annual meeting and this year local charities will benefit.

Arrival of a dozen sleek and colorful Trailways buses and more than 125 Trailways company owners and industry leaders are expected.

This year, five non-profit organizations have been selected to receive donations from Trailways during their meeting as a way to give back to the local community.

Proceeds from the Trailways auction will be awarded to the following Destin groups:   

  • Fisher House Foundation, Destin (Past President, Tom Rice accepting).  Fisher House Foundation is a network of comfort homes where families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. These homes are mostly located at major U.S. military and VA medical centers.
  • Fishing & History Museum of Destin (Director Jean Melvin, our Museum President Dave Steele and Curator Kathy Blue accepting) – Funds will help with preservation/restoration of the oldest seine (net) fishing boat still in existence, The Primrose, built in 1925.  (Trailways attendees will also tour the museum while in Destin on Sun., March 9 from 1:00 p.m.-2:30 pm)
  • Boys & Girls Club of Destin – Works to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.  (rsvp pending)
  • Sharing Hands Network, Destin – Aids the poor and homeless in Destin; works to strengthen families and enrich communities. (rsvp pending)
  • Shriners Hospitals for Children of Florida – (Pete Fragale and Anthony Mallory, Hospital Vice Chairman, accepting) – Provides quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries and other special healthcare needs.  Thank you all Shriners in attendance.

Tony Fiorini, Chairman of the Trailways Board of Directors, and owner of Silver State Trailways based in California and Nevada, created the new charity program to benefit the host city where Trailways meets annually.  “This is the first year of our donation program.  We want to give to various organizations that help the local community in different ways.  Sometimes a little can to a long way.  We’re providing approximately $5,000 total and hope to build the program in the future to give even more,” he said.

In addition, motorcoach business is good for the local economy overall.  “Motorcoach business is important to Florida’s economy and the state is a very popular destination for tour buses,” President and CEO of Trailways, Gale Ellsworth, said.  She said each Trailways motorcoach charter or tour group trip supports five jobs and one overnight visit is worth $5,000 to $11,000 per coach to a destination.
